Flute making workshop with Year 4
After weeks of preparation finally the big day! In their classroom children discussed materials, design, construction. Practiced mesurement. In music class we talked about musical instruments: how they work, how is their design, how the materials influence sound. We looked at different types of flutes from all over the world, why they are so different and yet so similar.

Year 3 notation skills
Year 3 students are now ready to write and read music using traditional notation. They are doing an excellent job, but now it's time to consolidate and speed up their reading. It is important that children practice at home, using this site (on the right side under Music helpers and games you find a link leading to the Note practice activity)or just using their music folders.
Year 5 and 6 students
This is a very important time of the year, when children are preparing for the Arts Week concert. It will take place on the 17th of May but we are already busy finalizing the music pieces. Children in Years 5 and 6 will play some of their recorder pieces for the audience. After the holidays I am going to select the students who are ready to play. Parents can help out by ensuring that your child is practicing regularly at home.

Question to Year 6 students
In your class you have been working on your UOI, where the Central Idea is: "The Earth is Part of a Vast and Complex Universe". During our visit to Gulbenkian we have learned about sound, how is it produced, how it can be changed, etc.
I have a question for you. Try to be a thinker, enquirer and knowledgeable as much as you can. Answer directly here on the blog, clicking on the "comment" link.
"We had several experiments with tuning forks. How would be the sound of a tuning fork in space?"
Good luck!

Year 5 in the Gulbenkian
We are learning about Jazz in music class, as it connects perfectly to their unit of inquiry: On the move. The central idea of the unit is "Throughout history people have been on the move with wide-ranging effects on themselves and the local population". As we have observed, jazz is a result of the fusion of african, native american and european musical traditions brought to America.
In the Gulbenkian children assisted to a presentation and jazz concert called "Journey to the world of jazz".
For further research this site is good starting point: http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/bhistory/history_of_jazz.htm

Year 1 song lyrics
We have started to learn a new song related to the UOI: "I had a little nut tree"
I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg
And a golden pear;
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake of
My little nut tree.
I had a little nut tree,
Nothing would it bear
But a silver nutmeg
And a golden pear;
The King of Spain's daughter
Came to visit me,
And all for the sake of
My little nut tree.
